Poem: What Is It?

What Is It

It’s not a disease that

needs to be cured,

not a bad habit that

ought to be spanked off,

not a ‘preference’ that

can be changed at will.

It’s not a religion that

one can be converted into,

not an epidemic that

spreads from a soul to the next.

It’s not a lifestyle that

comes into fashion and then goes out,

not a phase that simply

needs to be grown out of.

It’s not a sin that needs

to be cleansed in fire or holy water,

not a sign of insanity that

goes with a few electric jolts.

It’s in me, and not about me.

It’s just a part of me, not Me.
