The Hyderabad Queer Swambhimana Pride 2016 witnessed participation for a diverse intersection of sexuality, gender and caste issues along with solidarity for Rohith Vemula’s death and for the struggles of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students. As the walk passed through busy streets over a 2.5 km stretch, there was an inquisitive and, at times, supportive cheer from onlookers and passersby.
Mothers supporting their queer children led the pride march, exhorting parents to unconditionally love and accept their children! Also, after the march, several people spoke about the marginalization within the queer community itself and the struggle of their collective journey ahead. The entire process of organizing the pride collectively brought members from the community as well as supporters to work together bring about a better society.
