Under Family Pressure, Lesbian Couple in Mumbai Attempt Suicide, One Dies

A lesbian couple in Mumbai attempted suicide after their family found out about their relationship, leading to the death of one of them. A report carried in Mid-Day Mumbai, says that both the girls were aged 21 years old and in a relationship for over a year. Neha and Anushka (names changed) lived in the same locality and would spend the day together, often leaving their houses in the morning and returning back by evening.

A relative of Neha spotted them on Marine Drive, cuddling each other, and informed her father. Her father confronted her, and Neha confessed to being in a relationship with Anushka. He asked her not to meet her again, and called Anushka and her elder sister at a local politicial worker’s office to discuss the matter. Neha in the meanwhile attempted suicide by drinking phenyl, and was rushed to a hospital. On hearing the news, a heartbroken Anushka went home and locked herself in a room, where she committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling. Neha is currently recovering at the hospital and is out fo danger.

Police have arrested Neha’s father under Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 507 (criminal intimidation).
