Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah presented the state budget yesterday and announced a new monthly pension scheme for transgenders in the state. Under the “Mythri” scheme, trangsenders will be paid a monthly pension of Rs 500. Through the scheme, the government hopes to help people from the transgender community and bring them to the mainstream.
Transgender activists have welcomed the announcement by the Government, but also pointed out that the amount was too meager and that more needs to be done for the socio-economic development of transgenders.
