Despite the best attempts of Indian government, and the claims of the culture minister, India is the world leader when it comes to searching for the word “porn” online. 7 of the top 10 cities searching for porn online are from India, with Pune leading the world, the latest Google Trends data for the past 12 month reveals. A Times of India report had mentioned that 6 Indian cities were among the Top 10 cities worldwide searching for porn online. However, when we looked at the Google trends, we found 7 Indian cities to be among the Top 10 (as of writing this report, data subject to change with time)
Indian Govt. had recently ordered ISPs to block close to 900 popular porn sites. However, due to huge public outrage, the government had to quickly take back its order, restricting only a few sites which were hosting child pornography.
However, the Times of India report cautioned: “Indian cities leading in porn searches could be a tad misleading with many countries missing from the data.”
